WCL Sports Management Guide #4: WCL Camps

Guide 1: What is Eurobasket video (click here). Who we are and how to research the market
Guide 2: Highlight Tapes, Game Tapes, and Resume. Detailed Info and Deadlines in May
Guide 3: Scams, Certified Agents Classifications, and Deceptive Marketing

These guides are meant to give you a step by step protocol for what you can/should be doing to give yourself the best opportunity at securing a pro contract. If you missed or want to review a prior guide please refer to the links above!

  • Guide 1 talked about who we are at WCL and how you can use our services to gain knowledge on the market. I think we can all agree you have a better opportunity if you understand what you are pursuing. ‘
  • Guide 2 told you want documents/items most general manager’s will want to see before starting to offer you a contract. Just like any job application, you have to provide a resume and cover letter. Guide 2 told you what those are in the basketball job market.
  • Guide 3 told you how to protect yourself. With basketball in over 197 different countries across the globe there are a lot of people out there that try to operate in basketball. Not all of them have good intentions. Guide 3 provides you with key things to look out for to avoid getting scammed.

Guide 4: The Interview

I named this guide “The Interview” because you have to be seen to get a contract. A contract doesnt just magically appear unless you are coming from a top D1 program that is getting National/Global news recognition weekly. There are not a lot of ways to get seen on the international scene, so I suggest players take AS MANY OF THESE ROUTES as possible. If you click here I created a graph that exemplifies the different options

    • Camps or Tours: These are things that we do best. I will give you more info below on how and why you can utilize this. Graph: You can get seen by more eyes in the fastest time frame
    • Certified Agents: We talked about this in the last guide and will talk about how to find a certified agent in a future guide. Graph: You can get seen by a good amount of connections but over a longer timeframe
    • Community Network: This is from your current relationships. Utilize connections your coaches, trainers, or mentors may already have. Graph: You can get seen by less connections but over a quicker timeframe
    • Social Media: By using my former company’s website, you can find exact clubs in specific countries. Most have Instagram or Twitter. It never hurts to slide into a DM with the items from Guide 2 and hope for a good response. Graph: You can connect with a good amount of time over the takes the longest timeframe.

Overseas Camps in USA: WCL Camps

This method along with having an agent are your best options for wider reach to reel in a contract. Why? Call me biased, but my network of coaches, teams, and agents that use our platform everyday will immediately get more eyes on you. The proof is in the over 1,000 players from my camps to sign professionally. I was the Director of the Eurobasket for 6 years which gave me one of the largest networks in all of international basketball. By coming to one of our camps, you can get into the network first hand.

1. For 2022, teams know you are available. Approximately 65% of the Senior class returned in 2021 for the free covid eligibility year. The covid eligibility is going to confuse international teams for 4 years as questions on who is available and who is returning to school are not clear. By being at a WCL camp you are signaling to teams and agents globally that you are actively pursuing a pro career.

2. The camps are held in 5 different regions of the USA (Dallas, Atlanta, Indianapolis, NYC/Philadelphia, and Las Vegas), travel to one of these cities from anywhere in the country is far less expensive than traveling overseas for a tryout. Click on the city above to view specific dates and info for that camp city.

3. The goal of the camp is to get you seen and signed. That could be directly from your camp performance or it could be from being recognized in the camp resulting in the team viewing your highlights, game tapes, and resume you created in Guide 2.  Despite all the Covid restrictions we still had 145 players sign from the camps in 2021 and 154 players in 2020. Pre-Covid in 2019 we had 227 players go on to sign professionally from the camps that year.

4. Each player gets at least 3 games in the camp and 1 practice to prepare for the games.

5. Players from D1, D2, D3, and NAIA will be put on an equal playing field against each other. It is an opportunity to prove your ability against some of the top talent around the country no matter where you came from.

6. Each player will get a highlight tape from their participation in the camp. Again, something that can be used from Guide 2.

7. Each Game is streamed via the WCL Youtube Page which allows teams globally to watch live or at their convenience. The games will also stay available for your use 24/7.

8. Each WCL Camp game has full stats and advanced data analytic metrics from your play to show your contributions across every part of the game.

9. Each team will have a professional coach or agent running their team to guide them into the best opportunity to succeed. The AAU or All-Star game style bullshit wont be permitted. You come to be a pro, we will have you playing like pros.

In order to provide all of these benefits and opportunities, the camp cost is $399 if you get signed up before June 20th with a $99 registration deposit. The remaining amount can be paid upon arrival at the camp. Due to the variation in travel expenses from player to player, hotel and travel expenses are not included in the cost of the camp.

WCL Camp Dates: Vegas July 8-10, Indianapolis July 15-17, Dallas July 22-24, Atlanta July 29-31, and NYC/Philly Aug 5-7,

Certified Agents

This is going to be a full guide topic in a week or two so I wont go into a whole lot of detail right now. I think common knowledge is that player agents exist to get players professional jobs. If you choose the right agent then they can be a extreme benefit, but also a big time detriment if you choose the wrong one. My advice on this topic for this guide.

  • You have someone with knowledge of the industry helping you out. That could be me (Evidence of my FIBA Certification) or it could be any other certified agent. Anytime you can run a question by someone with knowledge is going to be a benefit.
  • Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. The agent may have the knowledge of the industry, but do they also have the expansive network base that can help you get signed?
    • I can tell you first hand for the 10 years working in this industry, it is a hard nose grinding job to get in touch and communicate with teams across 6 continents and 16-18 different time zones.
    • Most international agencies that work with the mid major D1, D2, D3, and NAIA players are single individuals or at most 3 or 4 employees. The time consumption that it will take for them to reach a maximum amount of teams and countries is enormous. Leaving your opportunities in the hands of a single person can be a gamble.
  • If you can have myself (an Agent and Camp Director) and another agent actively marketing both your college and camp materials it will give you the top two options to get a job. Some agents are stronger than me in certain areas whereas I am stronger than agents in certain areas. Its good to have the best of both worlds.

Community Network

If you are lucky enough to have a support system around you that has overseas experience or connections then its a great option! Try to use as much of these resources as possible. However, I would advise you to NOT RELY SOLELY on these connections. In my experience, these people who are not working in the industry on a daily basis do not have an extended network. Therefore, while your percentages may be higher for those particular clubs/teams within the connection base, your overall percentages are much lower across the other 99% of clubs/teams outside the connection base.

Social Media

This is for those players that are extreme go getters. The person most invested in your success is yourself. Social media has increased the ability for you to reach out to teams on your own if you so choose. I have seen teams that have accepted players simply off of this method and their desire to not pay an agent fee. Putting yourself out there like this does put you at a higher risk of finding a scammer. So please always refer to Guide 3 or myself to double check everything is legit!

Recommendations

Just like in any job search, the more methods you are able to pursue the better chance you have of landing the best possible job. The camps provide the most extensive reach across all the countries and can be used to find an agent. We have worked with countless agents over the years from recommending players to having the agents send their own players to the camps themselves.

If you are proactive enough on social media and are lucky enough to have a close connection to certain teams overseas then that is just an extra bonus that can get you past the interview and to a job offer.
