Each year distinguish members of the Eurobasket Summer League camps go on an overseas tour to compete against professional teams in respective countries. This year 12 members are on their way to Madrid, Spain to compete in a 8 game schedule with the attempts of securing a professional contract in Europe. In past tours, 70% of the players that have gone on the tour end up receiving a professional contract. This year the Spanish Team will be coached by Russian Coach Allen Mkrtychyan. Coach Mkrtychyan was at the helm of the German Tour Team that went 9-1 and had a 95% contract rate. “I am very excited to coach another group of young players that are looking to extend their careers. Spain is one of the best countries for basketball worldwide, so I think we all will be ready for the challenge” Coach Mkrtychyan said.
Coach Graham Wilson, Tour executor Kawika Lyons, and ESL Director Dustin Simcox will also be on the trip assisting Coach Mkrtychyan. Coach Wilson has served as an international coach in 14 different countries over his illustrious career including a 4 year stint as Toronto Raptor Head Coach Nick Nurse’s assistant. Wilson and Lyons each have been integral parts of the Eurobasket Summer League camps in each of the past 4 years. “I think this team is equipped to be successful because of the leadership we have brought to the table. Coach Mrktychyan, Coach Wilson, Kawika, and myself have years of international experience under our belts. Hopefully we can surprise some people over here and get a lot of deals signed,” Eurobasket Summer League Director Dustin Simcox said.
The team this year features forwards Robert Sampson (son of Ralph Sampson), Raghav Sehgal, Ryder Mansfield, and James Mauro. The wing positions will feature Justin Gammill, Jackson Canfield, Jonathan Huffman, Diontre Cutliff, and Keil Kelly. Then rounding out the squad at the guard position will Ricky Kelly, James Morris, and Marcus Huff. All games will be recorded and posted via Youtube for international teams to view. Krossover Technology will also be performing their advanced analytics data on each players performance during the trip.
Special Thanks to Manuel and David and the entire Romaior Sports Tour Group for helping us organize this trip!
